Vital Mathematics

Vital Mathematics is an after-school mathematics program for grades K–5 in Mount Pleasant built on the principles of the internationally respected Singapore approach. The program is designed to cultivate, challenge, and support students through carefully sequenced instruction that prioritizes depth, rigor, and conceptual mastery.

Students develop transferable number sense, deep conceptual understanding, and the ability to analyze and solve complex problems with critical thinking. Instruction also emphasizes metacognitive awareness of strategy and clear intellectual communication, equipping students not only to arrive at answers, but to understand and explain their reasoning.

Learning experiences are thoughtfully structured to include rich mathematical discussion, purposeful skill-based activities, and abstract practice supported by rigorous, individualized feedback. Within intentionally small, grade-level cohorts, students are both challenged and supported at their current level to build lasting competency and mathematical confidence.

Placement is determined through a collaborative conversation with families to ensure each student is positioned for meaningful growth. Parents play an important role in sharing insight into their child’s readiness and goals, while final placement reflects careful consideration of skill development, long-term progression, and cohort alignment.

What is Singapore Math?

The Singapore approach to mathematics emphasizes deep conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization of procedures. Students engage with each concept through a deliberate progression from concrete exploration (hands-on materials), to pictorial representation (visual models and drawings), and ultimately to abstract reasoning (numbers and symbolic notation). This structured progression builds clarity, flexibility, and lasting mastery.

Instruction is organized around coherent mathematical themes and big ideas—including properties and relationships, representation and communication, abstraction and application, and operations and algorithms—so that students see mathematics as an interconnected system rather than a collection of isolated skills.

Adopted by leading independent schools seeking depth and rigor, the Singapore framework has also contributed to Singapore’s consistently high performance on international mathematics assessments such as TIMSS. At its core, this approach develops strong problem solvers who think metacognitively, communicate reasoning clearly, and approach mathematical challenges with both precision and confidence.

Instruction at Vital Mathematics follows a consistent three-part framework designed to support conceptual development and mastery.

CLASS FORMAT

  • Bright red starburst shape

    LEARN

Lessons begin with focused instruction and rich mathematical discussion. New concepts are introduced with clarity and purpose, encouraging students to analyze ideas, ask questions, and articulate reasoning.

  • Empty orange badge shape with scalloped edges on a white background.

    EXPLORE

Students deepen understanding through purposeful problem solving, collaborative tasks, and hands-on activities that make abstract concepts visible and accessible. Exploration is structured to strengthen connections and build flexible thinking.

  • Empty black circle with a light blue outline.

    PRACTICE

Students work toward mastery through independent application, individualized feedback, and guided reflection. This phase reinforces precision, strengthens procedural fluency, and develops the confidence to approach increasingly complex challenges.

About the Founder

Michael Salomon is the founder of Vital Mathematics. He graduated from Pace University and began his professional career in accounting with organizations including WPP and the National Hockey League. This background shaped a deep appreciation for the importance of rigorous thinking, structured progression, and long-term skill development in mathematics education, ultimately leading to the creation of Vital Mathematics.

In 2012, he joined the New York City Teaching Fellows and spent more than a decade teaching in public schools in Brooklyn. His experience includes high-needs special education settings as well as academically diverse classrooms in communities such as Park Slope. Across these environments, he developed expertise in differentiating instruction, supporting rigorous academic growth, and fostering mathematical confidence in students at a wide range of skill levels.

Through both professional and classroom experience, he recognized the importance of collaborative learning, intellectual discourse, and metacognitive development — ensuring that students not only solve problems, but also understand their strategies, articulate their reasoning, and reflect on their thinking. These principles now inform the instructional approach at Vital Mathematics.

Vital Mathematics was founded to provide families with a structured, Singapore-based mathematics program that emphasizes depth, mastery, and thoughtful progression within intentionally small cohorts.
