ABOut mE

After graduating from Pace University in 2006, I, Michael Salomon, began my career as an accountant with dynamic organizations such as WPP and the National Hockey League.

In 2012, I followed my passion for education and joined the New York City Teaching Fellows, spending the next 13 years teaching in public schools in Brooklyn. My experience spans from high-needs special education settings to the diverse classrooms of affluent Brooklyn’s Park Slope community.

As both an educator and a parent, I saw the growing demand for high-quality math enrichment — especially programs rooted in the Singapore approach — and founded Vital Mathematics to meet that need.

my teaching philosophy

My teaching philosophy is to facilitate learning through rigor and challenge tailored to each individual child’s abilities, experimentation in order to build confidence, collaboration with teacher and peers, and reflection with an aim to grow both in academic skills and a love of learning math.

Vital Mathematics

At Vital Mathematics, students engage in Singapore Math enrichment in Mount Pleasant, SC, developing conceptual understanding through hands-on, visual, and abstract methods. I envision Vital Mathematics as a place where parents can guide their child through the mathematical journey. A student can learn in the class that matches their current grade level to work towards mastery of the associated benchmark skills. A student can also take a class at their previous grade level for intervention or to build a stronger foundation. If a parent feels their child is ready to enrich themselves and gain exposure to skills in grade levels above their current grade level, they can.

What is singapore math?

Singapore Math emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, not rote procedures. Students engage in each concept and develop their understanding through the concrete (hands-on objects), pictorial (visual models and drawings), and abstract (numbers and symbols). Lessons are designed around themes and big ideas in math including Properties & Relationships, Representations & Communications, Abstractions & Applications, and Operations & Algorithms. This framework of mathematical problem solving encourages metacognition, procedural awareness, mastery of conceptual understanding, strong skills, and a positive attitude.

Each lesson at Vital Mathematics follows a three-part structure designed to engage, challenge, and empower students.
